102nd Annual Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Conference

Don't Be Good; Be Great!

Boys & Girls Club alumnus and best-selling author of Good to Great Jim Collins delivered the keynote address on attaining superior performance at your organization. After researching the elements of great companies for some 20 years, Collins knows that great companies help create a great nation.
". . . but to have a great nation, we need good education, good public services and great Boys & Girls Clubs. Our greatness as a nation is not guaranteed," said Collins. "The key to renewal of a great nation is the next generation and the next generation. We must build the right citizens. They will solve the issues that are thrown at us as a nation."
"When I reconnect with your mission . . . that is a noble cause. Don't settle for being only good. Your work is too important. Good is the enemy of great."

After studying the research and analyzing statistics of great companies, Collins has learned that "greatness is not a function of circumstance. We are freed by our choices and disciplines. The critical difference is not between business and social, but from great to good." Collins stressed a culture of discipline is imperative for a great organization, Club upon Club, day upon day, kid upon kid.

To build the discipline and passion needed for a unstoppable, powerful Movement, we must:
(1) Hire the right people;
(2) Find our direction; and
(3) Always put people before anything else.
If we fail, we lose kids. Leaders should spend twice the amount of time on the question of "who" than the question of money.

In studying the leaders at great companies, Collins found a common element: humility. However, these leaders had the type of humility that was an absolute, burning passion for the cause, the work, the company, but not of themselves.

Each of us should define our absolute values. "Good change is rooted in values that do not
change," said Collins. "If we ever lose sight that it's not about us, it's about the kids, we lose. Go out and make yourself useful. Do great work . . . and I thank you."
